Music instructor in Wallingford accused of sexually assaulting a student

WALLINGFORD, CT (WFSB) – A music instructor in Wallingford was charged with sexually assaulting one of his students.

Adam Rossino Romo, 36, of Meriden, was arrested on March 17 after a complaint of a sexual assault of a minor, police said.

Wallingford police called him an ex-director of the Mariachi Academy of New England.

Police said they responded to an address on Washington Street on Jan. 31 in response to the complaint.

“Through investigation, it was found that Romo had established a sexual relationship with a minor who was one of his musical students,” they reported.

Police said Romo was a Mariachi-style instructor.

“It was discovered that Romo had sexual encounters with this minor several times over a period of time,” the report continued. “Numerous other incidents were discovered where Romo made sexual advances on other students.”

Officers said that during their investigation, they found the incidents had been going on for 4 to 5 years.

Police said the incidents didn’t happen at a specific location, but while Romo was in the car driving the victims.

“He was responding to addresses to instruct children in mariachi style music. Nothing happened at any physical location in Wallingford it mostly happened in transit in some kind of motor vehicle in town here,” said Sgt. Stephen Jaques, Wallingford police. “He had a relationship with these minors because he was their musical teacher and he’s been instructing them for a number of years.”

Romo faces six counts of risk of injury to a minor, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, and two counts of second-degree sexual assault.

Channel 3 reached out to the Mariachi Academy of New England, but the phone number was disconnected and the website was removed.

Romo was placed on a $50,000 bond and given a court date of April 1 in Meriden.

The Spanish Community of Wallingford released a statement on Romo:

Mr. Adam Romo was a volunteer for our music program for a brief period in 2016. Our association with him ended, and he moved on to start his own non-profit organization.

We were recently made aware that an incident occurred between Mr. Romo and one of his students. We immediately contacted the Wallingford Police Department to report the incident.

The well-being of every member of our community has always been and will always remain our main priority at the Spanish Community of Wallingford.

Wallingford Public Schools sent a letter home to parents in which the district said Romo had no affiliation with it.

“Earlier [Wednesday], a breaking local news story may have come across many of your newsfeeds. Its headline stated that a Wallingford teacher has been arrested for misconduct with students in his charge,” the district wrote. “This individual is not, nor ever has been, an employee of The Wallingford Public Schools.”
