JCPRD weekly program highlights: April 10-16

Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, the Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round programs, activities and special events for all ages.

For more information or to register online for the programs listed here, visit JCPRD.com/Register and complete a search for any of the activity numbers. To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

While JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

“The Sparkletones(Weekend Performances Through April 3)

  • Ages: Rated PG for older teen mature themes and language
  • Times: Evening performances on April 1 and 2 at 7 p.m., afternoon performances on April 2 and 3 at 2 p.m.
  • Location: Theatre in the Park indoors at The Black Box Theatre inside The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • Cost:
    • Evening performances on April 1 and 2 at 7 p.m.:
      • $14.50 for children ages 10 and under
      • $14.85 for seniors 60 and older
      • $16.50 for adults 11 to 59
    • Afternoon performances on April 2 and 3 at 2 p.m:
      • $11.60 for ages 10 and under
      • $11.88 for seniors 60 and older

  • Description: This heartwarming new musical world premier drama is all about sisterhood and song, and how love endures no matter the time or distance. The story of the four women in “The Sparkletones,” a singing group in the 1960s, weaves musically through 30 years, and marks the passage of time through an energetic, beautiful and memorable score. This original production was written by Kansas City regional composers and lyricists. Each show will last about two hours with a 15-minute intermission.

JCPRD Lifeguard Training April (April 7-10)

  • Ages: 15 and older
  • Location: Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center
  • Sessions:
    • April 7 from 4-6 p.m. via Zoom
    • April 8 from 4-8 p.m. on site
    • April 9 and 10, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. each day
  • Cost: Free to potential JCPRD employees
  • Description: This blended learning American Red Cross Lifeguarding class is intended for potential JCPRD employees only. If you do not wish to lifeguard for JCPRD, then this is not the class for you. Please fill out this form prior to attending. 

Art: Elements Workshop – American Gothic (April 11)

  • Ages: 50 plus
  • Location: Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park
  • Time: 10 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $15 for residents, $17 for non-residents
  • Description: Enjoy a series of one-day workshops that will define and explore the Elements and the Principles of Art. Discover artists, art styles and techniques, along with art history and appreciation. Take one or take them all to build upon your project! The next session is American Gothic, where participants will explore the works of “American Gothic” by Grant Wood and recreate it them their own style. The focus will be on emphasis, unity, space and color. Most supplies will be provided. If you wish to bring your own, you will need: watercolor paints; black and colored sharpies; Elmer’s and tacky glue; 12×15″ drawing paper; Extras: Small canvas panels, Acrylic paint, Oil pastels. Multi-Sport: Totally Tots (April 12)

  • Ages: 3-5
  • Location: Meadowbrook Park Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave.
  • Time: 1-1:45 p.m.
  • Cost: $3 for residents, $4 for non-residents
  • Description: Get active, have fun and learn to play with new friends! Kids will get a chance to play games, learn sports and meet new friends. Activity number 17098.

Birding: Spring Bird Walk (April 12)

  • Ages: 18 and older
  • Location: Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe
  • Time: 7:30-9 a.m.
  • Cost: $8 for residents, $9 for non-residents
  • Description: Join us for a morning walk in the woods to look for spring migrants and resident birds. Get help spotting and identifying different species. Bring binoculars if possible. Limited loaner binoculars will be available. Activity number 15767. Preregistration required, walk-ins not accepted.

Special Interest: Pruning Basics (April 12)

  • Ages: 50 plus
  • Location: Virtual
  • Time: 10-11:30 a.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Description: The thought of pruning can be overwhelming. When, where, how? There are just so many decisions to make. This class will help you take the guesswork out of pruning and give you the confidence to prune like a pro. Program presented by Dennis Patton, Johnson County K-State Extension. Activity number 17215.

Games: Scrabble® Day (April 13)

  • Ages: All ages
  • Location: Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr.
  • Time: 10 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $3 for residents, $4 for non-residents
  • Description: Did you know April 13 is National Scrabble® Day? This popular game was created in 1938 by American architect Alfred Mosher Butts. Let’s celebrate by playing a few rounds of Scrabble® with new friends and enjoying some refreshments. Activity number 16910.

Museum: Retro Storytime – “Baby Farm Animals”  (April 13)

  • Ages: All ages
  • Location: Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • Time: 10-10:45 a.m.
  • Cost: $2 per person, $1.60 for museum members
  • Description: Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! Craft activity included after the story ends. Illustrated by Garth Williams, this Little Golden Book from 1953 is a longtime favorite. Meet the baby farm animals in the book, then make a baby pig craft of your own. Cards: Bridge Workshops – Care & Feeding of Partner (April 14)

  • Ages: 50 plus
  • Location: Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village
  • Time: 6-7:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $10 for residents, $11 for non-residents
  • Description: Become an in-demand partner with these bridge workshops. Fun and easy classes help you master a new subject each week. Purchase each workshop individually or take them all! Workshops include hands-on instruction and handouts to take home. Activity number 17208.

Holiday Event: 50 Plus Easter Egg Hunt (April 14)

  • Ages: 50 plus
  • Location: Roeland Park Community Center, 4850 Rosewood Dr., Roeland Park
  • Time: 1-2 p.m.
  • Cost: $10 for residents, $11 for non-residents
  • Description: Who says kids get to have all the fun? This egg hunt is for 50 Plus only! Search high and low for these hidden eggs outside the community center. A special furry friend might even hop by for a photo op! Coffee and refreshments are included. Activity number 17185.

Museum: Kids’ Day Out (April 15)

  • Ages: 6-10
  • Location: Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • Time: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $35 per person
  • Description: Come have fun when school is out! Discover history through hands-on activities and exploration of KidScape and museum exhibits, play games and enjoy down time. Bring a lunch, snacks and a water bottle and dress for the weather (we will go outside if we can). We are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you may drop off and pick up at any time. Preschool: The Bunny Hop (April 15)

  • Ages: 2-5 with an adult
  • Location: Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village
  • Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Cost: $7 for residents, $8 for non-residents
  • Description: Enjoy a morning of food, music, games and crafts and ending with a small but fun Easter egg hunt. Activity number 17066.

Geocaching: Egg Hunt Geocache (April 15)

  • Ages: All ages
  • Location: Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch Rd., Merriam
  • Time: 11 a.m.-noon or noon-1 p.m.
  • Cost: $6 for residents, $7 for non-residents
  • Description: This modern-day scavenger hunt is a great way to spend time with the family out in your local park. Each group is loaned one GPS device and given instructions on how to find the caches hidden around Antioch Park. Caches are filled with Easter Eggs that are exchanged in for candy. Meet at Shelter #2. The Bunny will be available for photos from 11:15 am-11:45 am. 11 a.m. activity number 17167. Noon session, activity number 17168.

Family Fun: Camping Event (April 15)

  • Ages: 4 and older
  • Location: TimberRidge Adventure Center, 12300 S. Homestead Lane, Olathe
  • Time: Friday at 5:30 p.m. to Saturday at 9 a.m.
  • Cost: $25 per family of up to two adults and three children, $28 for a family of non-residents, $5 each for additional participant
  • Description: Come enjoy a night of family camping at TimberRidge Adventure Center. Staff will check you in between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Families need to bring their own equipment and food. No staff will be onsite overnight. Families need to be packed up and offsite by 9 a.m. Alcohol of any kind and pets are prohibited during this event. Activity number 15659. Technology: Smartphone Workshops – Text & Emails (April 15)

  • Ages: 50 plus
  • Location: Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell, Overland Park
  • Time: 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $17 for residents, $19 for non-residents
  • Description: Is your smartphone smarter than you? Learn the basic fundamentals of your device through helpful bi-weekly workshops. Purchase each workshop individually or take them all! Handouts and hands-on instruction included. Please bring your own fully charged device for hands on learning and know the Apple® ID or Gmail® address and passwords associated with your smartphone account. Activity number 17136.

Art: Sculptural Saturdays (April 16)

  • Ages: 3-7 with an adult
  • Location: Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • Time: 10-10:45 a.m.
  • Cost: $10 per person
  • Description: Your budding artists can explore three-dimensional art with a multitude of materials during this mini workshop. Sign up ahead of time or drop-in and pay at the desk the day of. Students will need an adult to attend class with them. Activity number 15975.

Nature & Outdoors: Orienteering Egg Hunt (April 16)

  • Ages: 7 and older with an adult
  • Location: Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe
  • Time: 10 a.m.-noon
  • Cost: $8 for residents, $9 for non-residents
  • Description: Bunnies don’t lay eggs! But ours has hidden some around the park! Meet our rabbit, Beatrice, and some egg-laying animals before you learn how to use a compass. Beatrice has marked course coordinates around the park for your team to find and test your skill. Find the eggs and return the compass to earn a sweet treat! Advanced registration required. One adult chaperone per group of five. Program may be cancelled for inclement weather. Activity number 16860.
